CobBale Art Studio
Located near Richmond, KY, this code-approved structure is a hybrid mix of Post & Beam construction with StrawBale, Cob, and SlipStraw infill walls on an EarthBag stem wall. This structure has been designed to take advantage of passive solar heating with it's heat-absorbing cob wall to the south and the remaining walls comprised of highly insulative bales of straw. Many of the materials used have been locally sourced, including the timbers, straw, rough-sawn lumber, gravel, and clay, minimizing energy used for transportation.
Earthbag Dome Home
Located near Berea, KY in the
Egrets' Cove community, this code-approved residence offered a unique opportunity to learn how to build a dome comprised almost entirely of polypropylene bags filled with crushed limestone from a nearby quarry. This project offered plenty of on-site lessons to help participants learn the tools, tricks, and techniques of constructing with EarthBags. Hands-on opportunities helped participants to gain a feel for the building materials as well as EarthBag as a technique for residential construction.
